Peanut oral immunotherapy trial at Children’s Hospital Westmead

A peanut oral immunotherapy trial is being conducted at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead. Here is what you need to know:

  1. This is an NHMRC government funded study
  2. The trial is open to children with a peanut allergy between the ages of 10-14 years of age
  3. The main aim is to determine whether the addition of peanut with a fibre supplement developed by the CSIRO can induce a state of sustained tolerance in children with peanut allergy
  4. Your child will randomly receive one of three treatments
    1. No therapy for 12 months (but then this group will then be offered, after the trial, peanut with the fibre supplement)
    2. Peanut + placebo supplement
    3. Peanut + fibre supplement
  5. All children enrolled need to:
    • Have a peanut challenge in hospital, initially at the start of the trial (to confirm they have a peanut allergy and at what dose they react to) and at the end of the trial (to see if the therapy arms have been effective)
    • Come to the Children’s Hospital at Westmead at least every 2 weeks (for about a year)
    • Be tolerant to soy
